camping in Kenya
Camping is an adventurous activity that draws you very close to nature giving you a clear pictures of wilderness. It is a great way to spend time with friends and family if done right. For a successful and an unforgettable camping experience, there are some safety precautions that you should put into consideration.
In this article, we are going to briefly guide you through all that you need to know concerning keeping yourself safe when camping in Kenya wilderness.
Know your camping grounds; Different camping sites have specific guidelines, rules and regulations to be followed when planning for camping on their grounds therefore it is very important to know the requirements, rules and regulations such as pet , fire and disposal rules and the basic guidelines so that you know if it meets your needs.
The rules and regulations help to maintain and reserve the camping site for future generations. They are good both for the camp and the visitors as well for their safety
Most camping sites won’t allow pets on their grounds because they are carriers of contagious illness that might be spread to park species.
First Aid Kit; Many camping sites are located in remote, isolated areas in the wilderness meaning there are no immediate hospitals in case of an emergency therefore a first aid kit should be among your top requirements you need while on your camping in Kenya. Let you first aid kit should at-least contain pain killers, antibiotics, a pair of scissors or blades, surgical gloves, antiseptic wipes, gauze, adhesive patches.
Keep on camping grounds; avoid wandering off most especially at night as you might expose yourself to dangerous attacks from the wild animals. Ensure to keep in the safe zones, keep your camp fire on as it scares off animals, use torches to check out in the surroundings in case you get curious about something, most importantly keep alert and always be very prepared for anything while camping in the wilderness.
Food safety; Camping is fun but can also expose you to potential health risks if you are not careful when it comes to food safety. Carry enough insulated storage boxes to keep your food safe , warm and clean, avoid eating leftovers, wash your hands thoroughly very well with soap before and after cooking. Keeping your food in storage boxes will also prevent critters from contaminating it.
Water purification; Endeavour to purify your bathing, cooking and drinking water as water from the wilderness springs is very unsafe for domestic use. To purify your water, you can either boil it, use filters or water purifying chemicals to make it safe most especially for drinking. You can also carry bottled drinking water to your camping safaris to ensure that you have got a safe, clean drinking water at any time you need it.
Hydration; camping most especially during the dry seasons in Kenya is associated with dehydration therefore you should ensure that you drink plenty of water. Ensure to bring enough drinking water to your camping or fetch from the streams and boil it to make it safe for consumption. Drink water before and after every adventurous activity, at-least 1litre of water every after 2long hours under sunshine, drink a bit more if you sweating too much.
Keep warm; When it is cold outside, it is important that you keep warm. Carry both light and heavy clothes as Kenya’s weather can sometimes be very unpredictable. Opt for water proof tents to enable you camp in the harsh climatic conditions like in rain and wind. Carry warm blankets, long sleeved shirts and trousers for the night.
Practice fire safety; Camp fires are great and fun but if not attended to very carefully and done in the right way, they can be very dangerous beyond your expectations. Avoid using candles inside your tents, Your camp fire should be at least 5m from inflammable objects like trees, your tents or bushes, you should extremely be careful when you are camping with children and pets as it is not okay for them to be near open fire sources, always attend to your camp fires and make sure that you completely extinguish them before leaving the camping site.
